The shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered pilgrim sites in India. It is located 61 Km north of Jammu at the height of 5,200 ft above the sea level in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The abode to Goddess Vaishno Devi is in the mountains of Trikuta Hills where the goddess reside in the form of three pindis namely Maha Kali, Maha Laxmi and Maha Saraswati. According to the Hindu Mythology the main reason of birth of Vaishno Devi was the destruction of Demon Mahishasur. The yatra towards this holy shrine begins from Katra and devotees have to cover 13 Km on foot to reach the shrine. The most important activity that a pilgrim has to undertake on reaching Katra is getting the registration for Yatra. The task of registration is done by Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board which is the only statutory and legal authority for the purpose. One Yatra slip is issued for a maximum of 9 family members. After trekking for about 9.5 Km devotees reach Sanji Chhat where they can take rest for some time. Shelters with modern amenities, drinking water and cafeterias are also available for the convenience of devotees. On reaching Bhawan, yatris have to show their registration slip and obtain the batch number that determines the place in the queue for darshan. The best time to visit this holy shrine is from March to July.
