Pahalgam is arguably the most popular hill resort in the Valley of Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 2,130 m above the sea level Pahalgam is 95 Km from Srinagar in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The hill station of Pahalgam is situated at the confluence of Aru and Sheshnag Rivers is also called as the "Valley of Shepherds". Surrounded by fir covered forests with snow capped mountain peaks Pahalgam is the starting point of holy Amarnath Pilgrimage. The scenic beauty of Pahalgam attracts thousands of tourists to this beautiful hill resort. The River Liddar flows near to the hill station of Pahalgam and has many scenic picnic spots that can be visited in leisure time. Pahalgam is also very famous for Saffron plants that are in full boom in November. Sitting on the horseback and exploring the scenic beauty of the Pahalgam hill station with the snow capped mountains in the backdrop is an exciting experience for the visitors. The hill station is bountiful with many places of interest such as Baisaran which is the most beautiful unspoiled grasslands, the village of Mamal where there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered to be the oldest existing temple dating back to 5th century, the delightful camping sites and flower meadows of Tasar Lake are few among them. The sporting activities that one can indulge at the hill station of Pahalgam are Trekking, fishing and golf. Pahalgam offer exciting trekking opportunities the best known being Pahalgam- Chandanwari-Sheshnag- Panchtarni – Amarnath Caves and Sonamarg Trek. The best time to visit the hill station of Pahalgam is during summers and during the annual Amarnath Yatra in July- August.
