About Leh and Ladakh


Ladakh is a part of Jammu and Kashmir,a Northern state of India consists of two districts of Leh and Kargil. Sprawling across the area of 45110 Sq. Km the district of Leh is bounded by Pakistan occupied Kashmir on the West, China in both North and East and lehul Spiti in the South East. Ladakh on the other hand lies between the Kunlun Mountain range in the North and Great Himalyas to the South. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 to 4,300 above the sea level the economy of Ladakh mainly depends on three major sectors that are tourism and army. For centuries the people of Ladakh enjoyed a stable and self reliant agriculture economy which is based on growing barley, wheat, and keeping the livestock. Most Ladakhis in the Leh and Zangskar districts are Tibetan Buddhist while the people of the Kargil district are Shia Muslims. The other minorities include Hindu, Sikhs and the followers of Bon religion. The principal language of the region is Ladakhi, a Tibetan language while the educated Ladakhis also know Hindi, English and Urdu. The culture of Leh and Ladakh is greatly inspired by the Tibetan culture. Thupka and tsampa are the most common food of the people of this region. The most popular sport in Ladakh is ice hockey and Cricket very. Archery is a traditional sport of the region and many villages still hold the archery festivals. The region has harsh winters from October to March and has the temperature well below the freezing point. The weather in the remaining months is generally warm and fine during the other months of the year.

How to reach Leh & Ladakh by Air:- Leh is the main Airport that is 8 Km from the city center. There are direct flights that link it to Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar, and Jammu & Kashmir. Indian Airlines, Jet Airways operate flights between Jammu, Delhi and Srinagar only on Sundays.

How to reach Leh & Ladakh by Rail:- The nearest railhead is Jammu which is 620 m from Leh. Jammu is connected to all major parts of the country through various express trains.

How to reach Leh & Ladakh By Road:-

Srinagar – Leh Road is the main route with an over night halt at Kargil. The road remains open between mid June to November. Various ordinary and deluxe buses run by J&K road Transport Corporation. Taxis can also be hired from Srinagar for this trip. Roads are closed between Leh and Srinagar from October to May.
