About Sonamarg


Sonmarg or Sonamarg is a popular tourist destination situated at a height of 3000 m above the sea level is 87 Km north east of Srinagar. Sonamarg literally means the "Meadows of Gold" as it is covered with flowers that wrap the meadows in the spring. Sonamarg is the last major point in the Kashmir Valley before the Zoji La Pass into Ladakh. From here the greenery of Kashmir changes to the barren and dry landscapes of Ladakh. Sonamarg acts as a base for several mountain trails that passes through several mountain lakes like Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. It is 15 Km from Baltal that acts as a base for Amrnath Yatra. The Sindh River flows though the Sonmarg where one can enjoy the trout and masher fishing. The best time to visit Sonamarg is from April to June. Visitors can hire ponies to explore the beautiful splendors of Thajiwas Glacier which is a major tourist attraction during the months of summers.

How to reach Sonamarg by Air:- The nearest Airport is situated at Badgam district of Srinagar that connects the capital to the major cities of India. From Airport one can hire cabs or taxis to reach Sonamarg.

How to reach Sonamarg by Rail:- Jammu Tawi is 5 Km from the city center is an important Railway Station .There are various express trains connecting Jammu to and from various Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Amritsar. The most popular trains among the visitors are Jammu Mail, Jammu Tawi, Jhelum Express, Rajdhani Express etc.

How to reach Sonamarg by Road:- Sonamarg is situated on Srinagar- Leh highway which is about 81 Km from Srinagar. The National highway NH1A connects Srinagar and Anantnag with Sonamarg.
